Television, drug of the nation. Control your habit with Rowmote [iPhone/iPad]

For anyone that uses a mac/PC for their TV needs, here are two things well worth checking out.

Firstly a great tip (lifted from Lifehacker) on how you can use your mac as a PVR… ‘How to Automatically Download TV Shows as Soon as They’ve Aired (or Turn Your Mac/PC into a TiVo)’ - full info here.

Secondly - if like me you’re on the eternal quest to minimise the need for physical movement - then you need to check out Rowmote.

Rowmote is a simple app that allows you to use your iPhone as a remote control giving you control over a massive range of apps on your mac. Plus, with the upgrade to Rowmote Pro you get full trackpad and keyboard control too.

Works really well, reduces the need to move off the sofa, what’s not to like?

Rowmote for iPhone and iPad is 59p, Rowmote Pro for iPhone and iPad is £2.99 from app store.

My TV Remote (iPhone): This sounds kinda clever - Multi device TV Remote, with EPG (electronic program guide) so you can see what’s on, plus Facebook integration so it knows your fave TV shows and your friends fave TV shows.

My TV Remote is free on App Store / $9.99 in app purchase to get the infrared hardware.

Note: Only available in US App Store for US TV at the moment. Bring it to the UK soon please!

Cloqwork. The strangest app description ever? (iPhone/iPad)

The prize for the most curious app description goes to Akio Nagano who describes his own Cloqwork app as “This app is a poor function clock. Inhabitants of this app will make times harder.”.

But, don’t be put off by what we think smacks of the work of an online translator engine (we’re sure the japanese description is a lot more accurate), despite its description Cloqwork is a very pleasant (not poor) abstract clock app… doesn’t offer any additional functionality, but nice to look at.

Cloqwork for iPhone and iPad is 59p on App Store.

Track down your lost iPhone or iPad remotely with ‘Find My Phone’ app!

Find My Phone allows you to find the location of your device with just your MobileMe sign-in details. It shows you where your iPhone/iPad is on a map, allows you to remotely password lock the device or even permanently wipe all the data if you think it’s a gone for good. Clever.

Find My Phone is free for iPhone and iPad. (MobileMe subscription is required)

Simplenote… a game changer?

Does what it says on the tin. A simple app that takes notes, but wins over the default Apple Notes app because Simplenote also syncs to the simplenote web app wirelessly too. This means you can write and access your notes via iPhone or web (at www.simplenoteapp.com). It’s free and works very fast with seamless syncing between the mobile and web that you hardly notice…

BUT, when you use Simplenote on your iPhone in conjunction with Notational Velocity on your laptop (or desktop or both) the pairing becomes what some call a game changer. In short it gives you synchronised notes on all your computers/devices with no fuss. Simples.

There’s a really good article on TUAW here which tells you more and gives you info on how to set it up. Do it, it might just change your life… or at least make it a lot easier anyhow.

Simplenote is free for the iPhone and iPad from App Store.

Where’s the nearest?…

AroundMe is a useful little iPhone app for when you’re out and about and need to find the nearest whatever to you. Use it to locate the closest taxi offices, ATM, petrol station, supermarkets, etc and with a few taps it’ll dial the phone number or show you the best route to get to it.

AroundMe is free from App Store

The iPhone RSS Reader We’ve All Been Waiting For

Quite simply the best RSS reader out there for anyone that has a Google Reader account. It’s very fast, does everything you’d expect it to do, and does it very well, but where MobileRSS triumphs over most is once your feeds are synced you can read them offline (perfect for the morning commute).

MobileRSS Pro is £2.99 on App Store, there’s also a MobileRSS Free version too (which features ads)

p.s. Whilst we’re chatting RSS, the Appaholics Anon RSS feed is available on this link. Go on, feed the addiction.
